US Open Of Surfing Presented by HURLEY

Fifty years at the Pier began in 1959, when the West Coast Surfing Championships (WCSC) became the biggest surfing event in the country - if not the world. HB local Jack Haley won the first event while the legendary Linda Benson took women's. This was the beginning of a long tradition of competitive drama along the 300-yard stretch known as the "South Side."
With interest on the rapid rise, the WCSC transformed into the United States Surfing Championships in 1964. Jim Craig and Linda Benson (again!) won that year, as the USSC remained the marquis surfing event of the summer. There were no professional contests at this time, so the event showcased the best talent the U.S. had to offer. During perhaps the most memorable USSC moment of the 1960s, David Nuuhiwa blew minds during the Junior final with his baffling nose ride clocked at 21 seconds. The ride today remains one of the most talked-about rides in US Open history.

The event became a victim of the culture in the 1970s, shutting down and vacating the premises during surfing’s decisively “anti-contest” decade. Advocates of the US Open call this period the “Dark Ages.”

The sun burst through again brighter than ever in 1982, when clothing brand Ocean Pacific founded the Op Pro. It fit the times perfectly, with its fluorescent colors, huge crowds, bikini contests and top surfers battling it out just yards from the masses. That first event’s final, won by Cheyne Horan with a backside 360 next to the Pier, soon became an event legend.

The legendary stories continued through the ’80s, with game-changing performances from surfers like Tom Curren, Mark Occhilupo, Tom Carroll, Richie Collins, Damien Hardman, Brad Gerlach, Sunny Garcia and Barton Lynch. While the performances in the water were undeniably five-star, the viability of the event on land came into question in 1986 when beach riot broke out.

The Op Pro never fully recovered after the riots, but that left the door open for even grander ideas in the future. The idea that made it —creating a US Open in the tradition of golf or tennis for surfing, couldn’t have been a better call for HB. Founded in 1994, the US Open of Surfing became the ultimate stop for a “stadium-style” surf competition. Fifteen years later, the US Open of Surfing still thrives as one of the most watched surf events every year. The US Open is to surfing what Augusta is to golf or Flushing Meadows is to tennis. It’s that big, and the world’s best surfers flock to it every year to prove their worth not only to the fans, but to themselves. Because if you can’t make it at Huntington, chances are you’re not going to make it.

Competing at the Hurley US Open of Surfing® is a lot of pressure. Not only are upwards of half a million people on the beach plus tens of thousands in cyber world scrutinizing your every move, there are major points and prize money at stake. In short, if you do well at the US Open, chances are you will do well anywhere. As a six-star ASP qualifier, it’s a gateway to the coveted breaks of Teahupo’o and Pipeline on the Dream Tour. A win here means 2500 points and a major boost in the ratings. Just ask last year’s champ Nathaniel Curran, who ended up winning the entire World Qualifying Series after taking the US Open. He also called it the “most significant win” of his career. The prize money is real motivator as well, with a $145,000 purse and $16,000 for first.

Format-wise, we’ll see more than 250 surfers whittle down to eight man-on-man heats on Saturday, which will play out to the last man standing on Sunday. Man on Man heats are a welcome addition to ASP World Qualifying series events, allowing the event to be focused, back-and-forth battles that hearken back to the glory days of the Op Pro.

This year, the addition of the WPS All Stars should add even more TNT, as guys like Kelly Slater, Mick Fanning and Dane Reynolds will be dropping bombs next to the Pier. Be prepared for a whole new level of performances on the South Side in 2009.

PRE ORDER RUSTY SURFBOARDS

Heres your chance to get your hands on these top surfboards as ridden by top Rusty team riders such as Jamie O' Brian and Josh Kerr. Theres limited numbers available so be quick. At only £399 or £409 (dependant on size and model) this is amazing value for such great boards.
These boards are due in end of the month simply email your model you want and size. All we require is a £99 deposit to secure it. Have a look below to see whats available:
Rusty Piranha Our proven, extremely popular, everyday modern fish. Among other things, traditional fish have a long, straight, rail line relative to their overall length and a lot of area behind the foot. The tail area is stepped down with 3 sets of wings. This help to make the board quicker from rail to rail and tighten the turns.
Rocker, bottom and thickness are similar to a performance shortboard like the Burnout. Has a full nose with the wide point nudged in front of centre. The triple wings step a fairly wide tail down to about a 5 1/2" inch split.
Also available as a quad.

Rusty Redline Our rider approved, everyday high performance squash tail. Josh Kerr gravitates to this design for its versatility and precision through and above the lip. If you're a back-foot oriented surfer, go with the Redline.
SpecsDeep single concave between the feet, relaxed rocker, and lower and firmer rails than average to facilitate sensitivity and quickness.

Rusty Predator The Predator I has all the design elements of the Redline but with very user-friendly dimensions: an extra 1/2 inch of width added overall, and volume increased about 10%.
Deep single concave between the feet, relaxed rocker and rails proportionately fuller and more neutral than the Redline.

Rusty GTR The GT is your go-to board for"between" swells, i.e. average, everyday surf. Back foot oriented surfers will enjoy the lift, drive and skate of this small wave machine.
Deep single concave between the feet running into a slight vee flaring off the corners, helping add rail arc and complete turns. Average entry rocker, plenty of curve on the rail for tighter arcs, finished with relatively flat tail rocker. The GT's tail is a little wider than average, with volume shifted back. Ride 1-3" shorter than your standard shortboard.

Rusty Burnout Nate Yeoman's go-to board. The Burnout is a logical balance between the Redline and the Injector, perfect for surfers that prefer the feel and versatility of a high performance swallowtail.
Single concave that finishes with a slight vee to lift the corners of the tail. Moderate nose rocker and higher than average tail rocker that lifts early off the midpoint. The tail shape allows for slightly more width through the fin area while adding extra bite and hold in larger surf. It also releases quicker off the top.

Rusty Bat Tail Quad If you've never ridden a quad, the first thing you'll feel is the speed out of the gate and no apparent top end. Quads also accelerate through cutbacks and redirect on a dime. Moderate concave through the drive area with a light vee spine apparent in the last 6 inches off the tail. Semi relaxed entry rocker with an average overall curve.

Hurley Coming to Surfside very very soon.....!

History of the brand
The Essence of Hurley is based on our love of the ocean and its constant state of change. With deep roots in beach culture, we are all about inclusion and positivity. Our brand was started with the idea of facilitating the dreams of the youth. Music and art are the common threads that bring us all together. We are passionate about freedom of expression and the individual voice. We place a premium on smiles. Welcome to our world – imagine the possibilities.
The history of Hurley traces its roots back to the surf industry in Southern California in the late 1970's. Hurley Surfboards was established in Costa Mesa in 1979. Well into the early 1980's, Hurley Surfboards was excelling as a company and Bob was shaping surfboards for many of the best surfers in the world. In 1982, Bob and his business manager, Joe K., began pursuing a hot Australian clothing brand, Billabong. Bob was attracted to the company because of their super long, punk rock boardshort styles. With the help of friends and family, Billabong USA was established as a separate entity and licensee for Billabong.
By the mid-1980's, Billabong USA was doing really well. Bob and his team were committed to thinking and doing things differently. The team took full responsibility for design, sourcing, marketing and financing.
Around 1995, the Billabong USA team began noticing a shift in the collective consciousness of the consumer. Bob and his group realized that the modern surfer also loved fashion, skate, snow, music and art. The Internet and digital technology put more power in the hands of the consumers. The team began to re-think what it meant to be a "surf" brand. By early 1998, the internal Billabong USA team was formulating a new idea for the future.
By the end of 1998, it was clear that the team had it's own vision for the future that did not necessarily serve the interests of Billabong globally. Coincidentally, the license agreement between Hurley and Billabong was also up for renewal. With much gratitude, Bob and his team gave back the Billabong license and decided to launch Hurley.
USA sales at that time were at 70 million dollars. The management team was both confident and dynamic. Things were very good. Planning the first year of Hurley business was very exciting. There were 150 employees with families, house payments, car payments, and etc. that trusted the management team to future success. Miraculously, the first year of Hurley resulted in a major achievement. Not only were the sales excellent, but also the company was profitable and no jobs had to be cut.
The loyalty and support of friends, retailers, athletes, and families was amazing during this transition year. Bob and his team are forever grateful and humbled for their belief in the vision of the brand.
THE FUTURE IS UNWRITTEN...

Can Kelly get his 10th title race back on track, after a bad start to the year with 3 17th placings but with a win in Brazil its back on.
Kelly has always done well at Jefferys winning the contest on 3 occassions. He is defently going to be one to watch and there will be alot of fans hoping he can pull of a good result here.

Parko will be hoping for another good result after an amazing start to the year for the Australian and Billabong team rider. He goes into the contest at the top of the ratings but with a trail of hot contenders its not going to be easy.
Joel's first WCT win was here coming in as a wildcard. Having come runner up in the ratings twice now Parko will be hoping to go all the way this year to be finally crowned world champion.
Others to watch here are Adriano de Souza from Brazil who is off to his best start and is currently no.2 on the rating then theres Mick Fanning and Taj Burrow that both do well here plus not forgetting Jordy Smith who will be on home soil.
